View full detailsGrapat is a family workshop in Spain making open-ended wooden loose parts — Nins (little peg people), coins, rings, bowls and Mandala pieces — in woods like beech and birch, hand-coloured with water-based, non-toxic dyes that meet EN 71 safety standards. There are no instructions: children sort, stack, count and build stories however they like, so Grapat suits a huge age range.
Nins are Grapat's simple wooden peg people — small, colourful figures with no fixed faces or roles, so children decide who they are. Used as characters, counters or sorting pieces, they're a cornerstone of open-ended and small-world play and pair with bowls, coins and rings.
Mandala pieces are arranged into patterns, radial designs and pictures, or used as counters and sorting sets. There's no instruction booklet by design: children explore symmetry, colour and counting at their own pace. Paired with Nins and bowls, they become an ever-changing open-ended play set.
With no single right outcome, Grapat pieces build creativity, fine-motor control and early maths as children sort, count and pattern. The open-endedness suits mixed ages and holds attention far longer than single-use toys, supporting the child-led play at the heart of Montessori and Reggio approaches.
Grapat's larger pieces suit toddlers from around 18 months for simple sorting and posting, while smaller Nins, coins and Mandala pieces are best for ages 3 and up. Because the play is open-ended, the same set is used very differently as children grow.
