HolzWald Hippopotamus small

This is the compact hippo, carved with its mouth closed and its body kept low and chunky. At 8.2cm long it is roughly half the size of the open-mouth hippo, which makes it easy to tuck into a pocket or a play bag. The calmer, sealed-mouth pose suits a resting-at-the-river scene.

It stands 5cm tall, runs 8.2cm long and is 2.5cm wide. The broad, flat underside keeps it steady on a shelf or table, and the short height means it fits comfortably inside a closed fist. That scale sits nicely alongside other smaller animals in the HolzWald collection.

The workshop colours each piece with natural Biofa dyes rather than heavy paint, then polishes it with a quality oil. The result is a soft, matte surface where the wood grain still reads through the colour. Because the dye soaks in instead of sitting on top, the finish wears gently rather than chipping into flakes.

It is a single solid carving with no small parts to detach, and the edges are rounded through several sanding passes. That makes it well suited to toddlers who can safely handle a smooth wooden ornament under supervision, and it stays interesting for older children building imaginative river scenes.
