Description

Learning First Nations languages supports First Nations and non-first Nation students to develop a strong sense of identity, pride and self-esteem that strengthens wellbeing and engagement.

First Nations language programs build respect for First Nations histories, cultures, people, knowledge and experiences amongst students and their families, school staff, and the broader community.

There are numerous First Nations languages and dialects, many of which are endangered.

An endangered language is one that is at risk of falling out of use, generally because it has few surviving speakers. If it loses all of its native speakers, it becomes an extinct language.

In Australia there are more than 250 Indigenous languages including around 800 dialects. Languages are living things that connect people to Country, culture and ancestors. We have chosen to represent languages throughout Australia.

We have used approved words for sharing and been in consultation with First Nations Land Councils.

Freckled Frog acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters, and special acknowledgment to the custodians of the languages that we have used on our blocks, Tiwi, Pintupi, Gudjal, Noongar, Bunganditj, Awabakal.

  •  26 pieces in each set.
  • Approximately each block 4 x 4 x 4cm.
  • Made with FSC Beechwood
  • Suitable for ages 1 year and over.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Languages of Our Nation set present?

The set is a collection of wooden blocks that share words from First Nations languages spoken across Australia. Freckled Frog notes there are more than 250 Indigenous languages nationally, and the blocks are a way to introduce and value some of those words in everyday play.

Which First Nations languages are acknowledged?

The set carries a special acknowledgement to the custodians of the languages featured, named as Tiwi, Pintupi, Gudjal, Noongar, Bunganditj and Awabakal. Freckled Frog also acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters where these languages belong.

How were the words chosen for these building blocks toys wooden set?

The building blocks toys wooden set uses approved words for sharing, chosen in consultation with First Nations Land Councils. Working this way is intended to show respect for the communities whose languages appear, and to introduce the words appropriately rather than assume permission.

How many blocks are in the set and how big are they?

There are 26 pieces in the set, with each block measuring approximately 4 by 4 by 4cm. The small cube shape is easy for children to hold, stack and line up while they meet the words printed on the blocks.

How can families and classrooms use the blocks?

Families and educators can use the blocks to introduce First Nations words alongside conversations about culture, Country and respect. Freckled Frog frames language learning as building pride, identity and understanding, so the blocks can support inclusive early learning when handled thoughtfully.

What wood are the blocks made from?

The blocks are made from FSC beechwood, giving a smooth, solid timber that holds up to everyday handling and stacking. The natural wood keeps the focus on the words and their meaning rather than on bright decoration.

What age is the set suitable for?

The set is suitable for children aged one year and over. Younger children simply hold and stack the blocks, while older children and adults can talk about the words and languages together, so it suits a broad range of ages.
