Grimm’s Mosaic Pastel 36 pieces

The set contains 36 cube shaped wooden blocks held in a square wooden frame. The frame measures 26 cm and each block is 4 by 4 cm. The blocks are coloured in soft pastel shades, and the simple cubic form makes them easy for young children to stack, line up and arrange.

The basic cube shape lends itself to simple structures such as walls, foundations, fences, stalls, houses, towers and castles. Children also use them to make tables and stools for pretend play, or lay them flat to create mandala patterns. Because the shape is so plain, the results are led by the child.

Grimm's gives an age guide of 1 year and over, which makes this one of their sets suitable for younger toddlers. Early on children enjoy stacking and knocking down towers, and as they get older they move on to more planned buildings and patterns, so the set stays useful for several years.

The blocks are made from lime wood and finished with a non-toxic water based colour stain and a non-toxic plant based oil finish. Grimm's uses natural timber, so grain and colour differ slightly from block to block. These small variations come from the natural wood and are not considered faults.

Stacking, balancing and arranging the cubes supports fine motor skills and spatial thinking as children judge how pieces fit and hold together. Sorting the pastel colours and forming mandala patterns adds early maths and design ideas, and the open ended nature of the set encourages imagination and independent play.
