  • Frequently Asked Questions

What is British Fossils and what will I find in the range?

British Fossils is a range built around real rocks, gemstones and genuine fossils. It runs from single stones you can pick up for a few dollars, through dig kits where you chip a specimen out of a block, to boxed sets you can sort, name and display. The idea is simple: put real natural specimens in young hands rather than plastic imitations.

Are the fossils and gemstones real?

Yes. The fossils are genuine specimens and the stones are natural minerals, not moulded plastic or resin copies. Because they are real, every piece differs a little in colour, shape and marking, and the fossils carry the small imperfections you would expect from something that formed in the ground rather than a factory.

How does a British Fossils dig kit work?

A dig kit gives you a moulded block with one or more specimens set inside, plus a small chisel and brush. You chip and dust the block away to free the fossil or gemstone hidden in it, much like a real excavation. It takes patience, works best on a covered table or outdoors, and the digging itself is most of the fun.

Which British Fossils items make the best rock collection for kids?

The boxed sets are the natural starting point: they gather several named minerals or fossils together, ready to sort and label. Add the single Dragon Rock stones, bought one at a time and picked at random, and a young collector soon has a varied, growing display without spending much at once. Dig kits then let them excavate a specimen of their own to add in.

Will what I receive look exactly like the photos?

Not exactly, and that is part of the appeal. Every stone and fossil is natural, so colour, size and pattern vary from piece to piece and no two are identical. The photos show the sort of specimen you can expect rather than the precise one that will arrive, and single-stone items are chosen for you at random from the assortment shown.

Are these suitable for younger children?

The dig kits and boxed sets suit school-age children who enjoy sorting and hands-on activity. Loose stones and small specimens can be a hazard for babies and toddlers who still mouth objects, so we suggest an adult supervises the youngest, keeps small pieces put away between play, and helps with the chisel on dig kits.

How do we look after the stones and finished fossils?

Wipe stones with a soft dry cloth to bring back their shine and keep them away from grit and hard knocks, which can dull a coated finish. Excavated fossils can be brushed clean and left to dry. A tray, tin or small pouch keeps a growing collection tidy and lets a young collector line their finds up and add labels.
