Guidecraft Discovery Frames

They are a set of large translucent frames in square, triangle and circle shapes for children aged 3 and up. Each frame has notches and holes for weaving and lacing with the three pieces of twine included. Six double sided concept cards give children starting ideas for layering, patterning and abstract designs.

As sensory toys the frames let children weave twine and layer found loose parts and natural materials, which are not included. Threading, wrapping and arranging pieces builds fine motor control and tactile awareness, while the translucent panels invite children to hold their creations to the light and study colour and shadow.

The set has three frames. The square frame is 22 centimetres wide by 22 centimetres high, the triangle frame is 26 centimetres wide by 23 centimetres high, and the circle frame is 23 centimetres in diameter. The varied shapes let children compare form and plan different weaving patterns.

Children thread the included twine through the notches and holes, then layer in loose parts and natural materials such as leaves, flowers or ribbon, which are not supplied. Adding found objects connects the activity to nature walks and lets each child build patterns that reflect what they have collected.

The frames are made from recycled material and finished with a translucent panel that lets light through. That translucency is part of the play, since children can hold woven frames up to a window or place them on a light table to see how colour and light interact.

The set includes the large square, circular and triangular translucent frames, three pieces of twine for weaving and six double sided concept cards. It is suggested for children aged 3 and up, an age when kids can manage lacing and follow the ideas on the cards.
