Papoose Toys Estuary Mat

The Estuary Mat has raised 3D features rather than a flat printed surface. There is a cave set in the water for fish or mermaids to shelter, plus two caves on the land side for small critters, which turns the mat into a landscape to explore.

The mat is roughly 60 cm by 90 cm. Since each one is hand-felted, small differences in the design and size occur naturally and are part of how every Papoose mat is made, so no two are quite identical.

As felt toys the Estuary Mat gives a soft, textured base for building a water and land scene. The caves invite children to hide and move figures through the setting, encouraging storytelling as fish, mermaids and little creatures come and go from their shelters.

It is hand-crafted and hand-felted in Nepal from wool. The felting process is what allows the raised caves and shaped features, and because it is made by hand each mat carries small unique variations in shape and finish.

Papoose lists it for preschoolers aged three to six and for older children and adults aged six and over. Younger children enjoy tucking figures into the caves, while older ones build longer stories around the estuary setting.

Being a wool felt piece, it is best cared for by gently spot cleaning the surface with a damp cloth and letting it air dry. Avoiding machine washing helps the 3D caves and overall shape stay intact for longer.

The mat works as a backdrop, so children can bring in felt fish, mermaids, small animals or other figures they already have. Adding blocks or natural pieces around the caves lets them expand the estuary into a wider small world setting.
