Freckled Frog Threading Tree

The Threading Tree is a 10 piece set built around a wooden tree, roughly 20 by 18cm, with 8 cotton laces that measure about 40cm long. Children thread the laces through the tree in their own patterns, then unthread and start again. The tree shape gives a playful base for practising lacing.

Guiding a lace through a hole asks children to pinch, aim and pull with control, which strengthens the small hand muscles used later for writing and dressing. Threading also builds hand-eye coordination and concentration as children track where each lace goes. Repeating the action across a session steadily improves precision and patience.

It is suitable for children aged 18 months and over. Younger children can start by wrapping and posting the laces, while older children create deliberate patterns and sequences. Because there is no single way to complete it, the set stays engaging as a child's dexterity and ideas grow.

Beyond simple threading, children can weave the laces around branches, sort them by colour, count them, or make up patterns to copy. The activity works well one-on-one with an adult naming actions and colours, or independently as quiet focused play. Each session can look different depending on what the child decides to make.

It is made with FSC Rubberwood for the tree and cotton for the laces. The wood has a smooth, solid feel and the soft laces are easy for children to handle. Wipe the wooden tree with a dry or barely damp cloth, and let the cotton laces air dry if they become damp.

Lacing brings together several skills at once: grip strength, coordination, focus and early planning. These abilities support everyday tasks such as doing up buttons and using cutlery, as well as school-readiness skills like holding a pencil. Because it feels like play, children build this strength without it seeming like practice.
