GAM 0-3 Cylinder Block 3

The cylinder block introduces the child to the first stage of visual discrimination of size. In this block the cylinders diminish in height while increasing in diameter, moving from tall to short and from thin to thick. Working out where each cylinder belongs trains the eye to judge two changing dimensions at once.

Each cylinder carries a small knob so the child lifts it with a pincer grip, the same hold used later for a pencil. Across this block the cylinders diminish in height yet increase in diameter, so as they get shorter they also get wider. Handling this graded set builds size discrimination while quietly preparing the hand for writing.

The block gives its own control of error. Because each cylinder fits only its matching socket, a misplaced cylinder leaves one that will not sit flush or a hole it cannot fill. The child sees the mistake without being told and can adjust, which supports independent, self-correcting work.

As a first sensorial exercise in size discrimination it suits younger preschool children who can manage the pincer grip on the knobs. It usually comes early in the sensorial sequence, before more demanding graded materials, and a guide presents it once the child can lift and replace the cylinders with control.

The knob is held between thumb and first two fingers, isolating the exact pincer grip needed for holding a pencil. So while the child concentrates on grading size, the hand is also rehearsing a writing hold. This quiet double purpose is typical of Montessori sensorial design.

Wipe the block and cylinders with a soft, barely damp cloth and dry them before returning each cylinder to its socket. Store the block away from direct sun and damp so the wood keeps its shape and the cylinders continue to seat cleanly. Keeping the set complete preserves the control of error.
