GAM Sound Boxes

The sound boxes develop auditory discrimination through exercises in pairing and grading a series of sounds. Shaking each cylinder, the child listens closely and sorts the sounds from very soft to loud.

The item has two sets of 6 sealed wooden cylinders, 12 in all, each set stored in its own wooden box. The two sets let a child match a cylinder in one box to the one that sounds the same in the other.

The cylinders are sealed so the child works by ear alone and cannot peek at the material inside. Each one holds something that makes a distinctive sound when shaken, from very soft to loud, isolating hearing.

These montessori sensorial materials carry two matching work types. In pairing, the child finds the two cylinders that sound alike; in grading, they line one set up in order from softest to loudest.

Keep each set of cylinders in its own box so pairs and grades stay complete. Wipe the wood with a dry cloth and store away from damp and direct sun to protect the cylinders and their sound.
