GAM Object Permanence Box With Tray

The object permanence box lets a baby practise eye-hand coordination and become familiar with object permanence: the understanding that a thing still exists even when it is out of sight. As the child posts an object into the box and it drops away, then reappears, they learn that the object has not simply vanished.

The child places an object into the opening on top and watches it disappear inside the box. It then comes to rest on the tray, where the baby can see it again and retrieve it. This simple cycle of posting, losing sight and finding builds both eye-hand coordination and the idea of permanence.

Grasping that people and things continue to exist when hidden is a key step in a baby's early thinking. The box makes this abstract idea concrete: the object goes away and reliably returns on the tray, so the child learns through repeated action that disappearance is not the same as being gone forever.

It is an infant material, suited to babies who can sit with support and are reaching for, grasping and releasing objects. Because it centres on early eye-hand coordination and the first understanding of permanence, it is usually offered in a baby's first year of active exploration, within easy reach.

The tray catches the object after it drops through the box and presents it back to the child in clear view. This gives the baby an immediate, visible result: post the object, then find it waiting on the tray. Seeing the object reappear each time reinforces both the coordination and the lesson of permanence.

Wipe the box and tray with a soft, just-damp cloth and dry them, since an infant material is handled and mouthed frequently. Keep it out of direct sun and away from damp so the wood holds its finish, and check that the object moves freely through the box after cleaning.
