Grimm’s Bobbins Small Threading Game

This is a set of colourful wooden bobbins that doubles as a threading game. Children can thread the bobbins onto the cord using the wooden needle, or stack them and sort them by colour on the coloured dowels. The play is versatile, so it moves from simple stacking to more precise threading as skills develop.

The set comprises eight pieces in total, including the wooden needle. The needle comes with a cord about 80 cm long for threading the bobbins. An additional wooden needle can be bought separately if more than one child wants to thread at the same time.

The bobbins are made from maple wood and lime wood, finished with a non toxic water based colour stain or a non toxic plant based oil finish. As they are wooden, the grain shows through the colour and each piece looks slightly different, which is a normal feature of the natural material.

Grimm's give a recommended age of 1 year and up. Younger children start by stacking the bobbins and sorting them by colour, while older children practise the finer skill of threading them onto the cord. Supervise very young children, since the set includes a needle and smaller pieces.

Threading the bobbins onto the cord encourages fine motor control, hand eye coordination and concentration. Sorting and stacking the bobbins on the coloured dowels also supports colour recognition and early counting. Because there is no fixed outcome, children can set their own challenges and repeat them as often as they like.
