    What are play silks used for?

    Play silks are large squares of coloured silk used for open-ended pretend play — capes, rivers, forts, doll wraps, dance ribbons, and peekaboo. Because a silk can be anything a child imagines, they're one of the most versatile toys around. Paired with dress-ups and costumes, they turn everyday play into elaborate make-believe. Toypark's range spans silks and dress-up pieces.

    Dress-ups and costumes fuel imaginative role-play — children become explorers, animals, or storybook characters, practising language, empathy, and confidence. Open-ended pieces like play silks, capes, and simple costumes work better than fixed character outfits because they can be anything.     How do you wash play silks?

    Hand-wash play silks in cool water with a little gentle, pH-neutral soap, rinse, and lay flat or hang to dry — avoid hot water, wringing, and the machine, which can damage the fibres and colour. Iron on low if needed. Washed gently, real silk keeps its sheen and strength through years of daily dress-up and pretend play.

    Why is imaginative play important?

    Imaginative play helps children make sense of the world — practising language, empathy, problem-solving, and social roles as they act out stories. Open-ended props like play silks and dress-ups let children lead the narrative, building confidence and creativity. It's some of the richest learning there is, all disguised as fun. That open-endedness is why silks stay in use for years.

    Real silk costs more than synthetic scarves, but it's stronger, drapes better, and holds colour, so a good play silk lasts through years of daily use as costumes, landscapes, and props.
