GAM Subtraction Snake Game

The material introduces the child to the unit combinations of subtraction for the numbers 1 to 9. By exchanging colored beads for a golden ten and taking away negative bead stairs, the child works through subtraction facts in a concrete, hands-on way before moving to written figures.

The set has three wooden boxes. A nine-compartment box holds ten sets of Colored Bead Stairs 1 to 9; a two-compartment box holds one set of Black and White Bead Stairs with twenty Golden Bars of ten; and a third box holds five sets of Negative Bead Stairs 1 to 9. All three boxes fit neatly into a beechwood tray.

The child lays a snake of colored bead bars, then counts along in units. Where a count reaches ten, a golden ten bar is swapped in and the black and white stair marks the place. Negative bead stairs are added to take amounts away, so the snake shrinks as the subtraction is carried out.

The work links quantity to the idea of taking away, giving a physical picture of subtraction facts within the numbers 1 to 9. Counting, exchanging and checking each step also strengthen concentration and one-to-one correspondence that later support written arithmetic.

It suits both a prepared classroom and a home following Montessori math. The graded boxes and tray keep every bead stair in order, so the material can sit on an open shelf and be carried out as a complete, self-contained work.

Each type of bead stair has its own compartment, and the three boxes drop into the beechwood tray so nothing is loose. Return the bars to their boxes after each session and wipe the wooden tray with a dry cloth to keep it clean.

The snake game is a lower elementary math work, taken up once the child is secure with counting, the golden bead ten and the addition snake. It builds on that base, so it is usually introduced after those earlier exercises rather than as a first number activity.
