    • Frequently Asked Questions

What can a 5 or 6 year old build with building blocks?

School-age children design and engineer — detailed towers, bridges, marble runs, and whole small-world landscapes, often planning before they build. Building blocks let five and six year olds test ideas, balance loads and rebuild, and pair well with figures and vehicles for elaborate play.

How do building blocks build STEM and thinking skills?

Blocks are hands-on physics and maths. Balancing, spanning gaps and stabilising structures teach spatial reasoning, geometry, cause and effect and planning, while persistence grows as five and six year olds problem-solve why a build fell. It's engineering thinking through open-ended play.

Are wooden building blocks still good at this age?

Very. Wooden blocks stack solidly for the ambitious builds school-age children attempt, and their open-ended nature means five and six year olds keep inventing new creations. Durable and often handed down, a good wooden set stays in use well beyond the early years.

Why are open-ended blocks good for 5-6 year olds?

Because there's no fixed outcome, blocks flex to whatever a five or six year old imagines, from a castle to a working bridge. That freedom builds creativity, planning and resilience, and keeps the set challenging as skills grow — used in countless ways rather than outgrown.

What building blocks set suits a 5 or 6 year old?

Look for a larger, varied set with planks, arches and shaped pieces that support complex, architectural builds. Marble-run and construction sets also suit this age. Combining with an existing set raises the piece count, giving school-age builders room for their bigger ideas.
