View full detailsAt school age, loose parts play becomes complex and creative — children combine open-ended pieces to build machines, mandalas, small worlds and inventions of their own design. Five and six year olds bring real planning and storytelling to loose parts, using them in endlessly different ways.
With no fixed outcome, loose parts stretch creativity, problem-solving, early maths and design thinking as five and six year olds sort, pattern and build. The open-endedness keeps them challenging, and combining pieces in new ways supports the flexible, inventive thinking school rewards.
School-age children enjoy a rich, varied mix — rings, coins, gems, tiles, natural pieces and small figures they can sort, pattern and build with. Smaller, more detailed pieces are fine now, and pairing loose parts with blocks or a doll house extends the play.
Offer a varied, well-sorted selection in open trays or jars, plus a mat or tray to work on, and let your child lead. Adding a loose theme — build a machine, make a pattern — can spark ideas, but the best play comes from their own inventions.
Yes — building, balancing and patterning with loose parts develops spatial reasoning, early engineering and design thinking, while inventing uses builds divergent, creative problem-solving. For five and six year olds, loose parts are open-ended STEM and art rolled into one.
