Puzzles build focus, spatial reasoning, memory and persistence, and the bigger jigsaws school-age children tackle stretch problem-solving further. Because puzzles are self-correcting, five and six year olds work independently and feel real pride in completing a challenging one.
Many six year olds happily manage 48 to 100-piece jigsaws, building up from around 24 pieces at five. The right level is challenging but achievable — enough to require effort and focus without frustration. Themed puzzles they love help sustain attention on bigger counts.
Simple strategy and cooperative board games, card games and dice games work well, letting a five or six year old compete fairly with older players. Choose short games with clear rules; they build maths, patience and social skills while bringing everyone together, screen-free.
