View full detailsSchool-age children stage elaborate make-believe — costumes, capes, superheroes, shopkeepers and story characters, often with plots and friends involved. Open-ended play silks become rivers, cloaks and tents, so at five and six they fuel complex, cooperative imaginative games.
Role-play helps five and six year olds explore identities, situations and social roles, building empathy, language and confidence. Acting out characters and stories with friends also develops cooperation and negotiation, making dress-up play rich social and emotional learning.
Open-ended silks and simple dress-ups can become anything a child invents, sparking more imagination than a fixed character costume that plays one role. They also suit group play, where five and six year olds assign roles and build shared stories, and they grow with the child.
Hand-wash play silks in cool water with a little gentle soap, then lay flat or hang to dry — avoid hot water, wringing and the machine, which damage the fibres and colour. Gentle care keeps real silk soft and vivid through years of dress-up play.
Many families think so. Real silk is strong, drapes beautifully and holds its colour through years of daily dress-up, and its open-ended nature means it's played with far more than a single costume. For imaginative, social school-age play, silks offer excellent value.
