GAM Third Box Of Color Tablets

The Third Box introduces the final stage of colour discrimination, which is grading. A child takes one shade and orders the rest of that colour from darkest to lightest, training the eye to read fine differences within a single hue.

The box contains 63 wooden tablets. They represent nine colours, each shown in seven graded shades, so a child has a full range to sort, match and arrange into smooth gradients.

The nine colours are red, blue, yellow, green, purple, orange, brown, pink and grey. Each appears in seven steps from dark to light, giving the child plenty of subtle differences to grade by eye.

Earlier colour work asks a child to match identical pairs and then name the main colours. The Third Box builds on that foundation by moving to grading, the most demanding stage of colour discrimination.

A child usually chooses one colour, finds its darkest tablet and lays the shades in order toward the lightest. Doing this for several colours across a mat gives a striking visual record of the gradients.

Handle the tablets by their frames to keep the coloured surfaces clean, and wipe the wood with a soft dry cloth. Store all 63 in the box away from strong sun so the shades do not fade.
