Beck Traffic Light with Pedestrian Signal

A small lever on the side flicks the light between red, yellow and green. As the light changes the pedestrian signal changes with it: red for cars shows a green figure to walk, and green for cars shows a red figure to wait. Children control both with one movement.

The car light and the walk signal always work in opposite. When drivers see red the pedestrian shows green and people can cross; when drivers see green the pedestrian turns red and walkers wait. This mirrors how a real crossing keeps cars and people apart.

As one of the Beck wooden traffic signs toys, the light gives a hands on way to talk about stopping and going. A child works the lever, calls out the colour and moves cars or figures to match, so the rules of a junction become something they do rather than just hear.

It stands 175mm in height, taller than the flat signs, and is made from maple wood. The extra height helps it act as the centre of a junction where several roads meet, and the base keeps it steady on the floor while the lever is used.

Set the give way sign on one approach and the pedestrian crossing sign beside the walk signal so the whole corner tells one story. Cars slow at the give way sign, wait on red, and move on green while figures use the pedestrian crossing sign to reach the far side.

The recommended age is 3 and over. It is not suitable for children under 36 months because of small parts and a choking hazard, so save it for preschoolers who can work the lever and follow the change of colours by themselves.

Wipe the maple wood with a dry or slightly damp cloth and dry it right away. Keep water away from the moving lever so it keeps flicking smoothly, and store it out of direct sun to protect the printed colours over time.
