HolzWald Koala

The koala stands upright with a round head, tufted ears and a stout body, as if paused mid-climb on a gum tree. Its compact, front-facing shape gives it a soft, cuddly silhouette that children recognise straight away, and the carved detail keeps it looking hand-made rather than moulded.

Every corner is rounded and finely sanded, so this koala and our other wooden animal toys feel smooth against a child's skin. It is one solid carved piece of local wood with no small parts, coloured in natural Biofa dyes and oil-polished for a warm, matte surface.

It stands 8.9cm tall, 8.1cm long and 2.5cm wide. The upright build lets it stand on its own on a shelf, and the slim width sits comfortably in a toddler's grip. It is a palm-sized figure rather than a large statement piece.

As an open-ended figure it fits bushland and eucalyptus scenes, sleepy-time stories or an Australian-animal small-world. Children can perch it on a pretend tree, talk about how koalas rest and feed, and combine it with other HolzWald animals to build a woodland.

It is carved from high-quality local wood, then painted with natural Biofa dyes and finished with oil. The material and craft are the focus here; the koala is a decorative open-ended figure and is not sold as a set, puzzle or pull-along toy.

Dust it with a dry cloth and wipe gently with a slightly damp one if needed, then let it dry fully. Avoid soaking, dishwashers and long spells of direct sun, which can fade the dyes. Stored on a dry shelf it keeps its colour for years.

It is crafted by hand in a small Georgian workshop that has made wooden toys since 1997. Because each koala is finished individually, small differences in grain and tone give every piece its own quiet character.
