GAM 0-3 Cylinder Block 1

In Block 1 the cylinders grow in both height and diameter together, from small to large. Because two dimensions change at once, the size difference is clear and obvious, which makes this a good first block for a young child.

Both height and diameter increase together here, so each step in size is easy to see. Starting with this obvious contrast helps a child succeed early before moving to blocks where only one dimension changes.

The Cylinder Blocks introduce the first stage of visual discrimination of size. Removing and replacing each cylinder trains the eye to compare dimension and the hand to place objects with care and order.

Each cylinder belongs to one socket. If one is placed wrongly it will not sit flush, and a cylinder will be left over at the end. This control of error lets the child self-correct without an adult stepping in.

The knob on each cylinder is held with the thumb and first two fingers. Repeating this pincer grip strengthens the fingers and rehearses the exact hold used later for a pencil.
