Freckled Frog Indigenous Symbols Matching Pairs

It is a set of 20 wooden discs, each showing an Indigenous symbol such as meeting place, waterhole or rainbow. Children turn the discs over to find matching pairs, playing a simple memory and matching game. Alongside the game, the symbols invite conversations about their meanings and about Australia's traditional landowners.

The discs were created in collaboration with award-winning Aboriginal artist De Greer-Yindimincarlie. Each symbol is drawn from Indigenous culture, so the set introduces these symbols in an authentic way. This makes it a respectful starting point for families and educators wanting to share and discuss Indigenous stories and knowledge.

Place the 20 discs face down and take turns flipping two at a time, looking for two that share the same symbol. When a pair matches, the player keeps it and goes again; if not, the discs are turned back over. Playing this way builds memory, turn-taking and focus while children get to know each symbol.

Each symbol carries meaning, such as a meeting place or a waterhole, which opens discussions about the land, community and Indigenous culture. Learning the symbols through play helps children feel positive and curious as they explore them. Adults can add context and stories so the set becomes a springboard for wider conversation.

The 20 discs are made with FSC beech wood and each measures 5cm in diameter, a comfortable size for young children to hold and turn. They come in a handy drawstring bag that keeps the set together between games. Wipe the discs with a dry or barely damp cloth to keep them clean.

It is suitable for children aged 2 years and over. At this age children can manage the discs, begin to remember positions and enjoy taking turns. Younger players can simply match visible symbols in pairs, while older children play the full memory version, so the set grows with them.
