Each acorn-Nin represents one day of the week. Their colours allow us to differentiate them and name them. According to the Waldorf pedagogy, each day of the week corresponds to one colour. The proposal that comes from this is that Monday is violet (or purple); Tuesday is red; Wednesday is yellow; Thursday, orange; Friday is green; Saturday, indigo, and Sunday is white.

Conventional calendars are linear and for children, a difficult concept to understand. The week begins and ends in a line, when time in reality does not work like that. When the week ends, it does not finish, time greets and welcomes a new day one by one and the circle goes around. The tactile quality of this beautiful natural material allows children to play and touch time. Each day the child awakens the corresponding Nin and places it on top of it’s upturned receptacle in the centre of the dish. The Nin of the day is offered a leading role, because it is his day and we celebrate it with joy. When night comes, the Nin returns to his receptacle to sleep, and will remain there for six more nights until the wheel returns to his day once again. Almost like a story, like a story that repeats itself, with its consequent pleasure.

This Grapat Weekly Calendar includes 7 acorn Nins, 7 cups in different colours and a wooden dish.

Recommended Age: 3+ years

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Grapat Weekly Calendar 7 Moons?

It is a wooden weekly calendar that helps children feel the rhythm of the week through colour. Each day is linked to a colour, following Waldorf tradition, so children can touch and name the days as they pass. Rather than a straight line, the calendar works as a circle, showing how one week ends and the next begins.

What is included in the set?

The set includes seven acorn-shaped Nins, seven cups in different colours, and a wooden dish. Each acorn Nin stands for one day of the week, and its colour helps children tell the days apart and name them. The dish holds the pieces and gives the calendar a central place to sit during daily play.

How does the daily routine work?

Each morning the child wakes the Nin for that day and places it on its upturned cup in the centre of the dish. That Nin takes the leading role, because it is its day. When night comes, the Nin returns to its cup to sleep and waits there for six more nights until its day comes around again.

Which colours match which days?

The calendar follows Waldorf colour tradition for the days of the week. Monday is violet or purple, Tuesday is red, Wednesday is yellow, Thursday is orange, Friday is green, Saturday is indigo, and Sunday is white. Linking each day to a colour gives children a simple, tactile way to learn the order of the week.

What age is the Weekly Calendar recommended for?

The maker recommends this calendar from 3 years and up. Because it includes small acorn Nins and cups, keep an adult close during play with younger children. From age three, children can follow the daily routine, name the colours, and start to understand how the days repeat week after week.

What is the calendar made from?

Grapat makes this calendar in a small family-run workshop in Catalonia, Spain, using mostly beech and birch wood sourced locally from sustainable forests. The pieces are finished with water-based, non-toxic colours. Because they are made and painted by hand, small differences between pieces are normal and part of their character.

Does the calendar work with other Grapat sets?

Yes. The acorn Nins and cups are part of the wider Grapat system, so they combine easily with other Nins, mandala pieces, and loose parts. Some families use the calendar on its own for daily rhythm, while others add extra pieces for storytelling and small world play. You can see more in our Grapat collection at /collections/grapat.
