Freckled Frog Threading Cotton Reels

The set contains 40 solid wooden threading reels, 10 tipped threading laces and one wooden storage box. Each reel measures about 3.5 by 3.5cm and the laces are around 40cm long. The reusable wooden tray keeps everything together, so the reels double as a tidy, self-contained activity that packs away neatly.

These are loose cotton reels rather than a fixed base, so children can thread them onto laces in any order and any number. The same reels also stack, sort and build into towers, which makes the set more open-ended. With 40 reels there is plenty for a group or for larger, more ambitious patterns.

Threading the reels strengthens fine motor control, hand-eye coordination and concentration as children guide a lace through each hole. Sorting and stacking add early maths thinking such as counting, grouping and comparing sizes. The mix of activities keeps children practising these skills in different ways within a single set.

Children can thread reels into necklaces and patterns, stack them into towers, line them up to count, or sort them by colour. The reels are made from solid wood with cotton laces. Wipe the reels and box with a dry or slightly damp cloth and avoid soaking them, which protects the timber. Store the reels back in their wooden box after play to keep the laces untangled and the set complete.
