View full detailsAt one and two, keep it simple and sensory: chunky crayons, finger or dab painting, sticking large stickers, and playdough. Toddlers are about the process, not the result, so mess-free and edible-safe materials suit this age best while they explore mark-making.
Early arts and crafts build the fine-motor control toddlers will later use for writing, while gripping a crayon or peeling a sticker strengthens little hands. Making marks and choosing colours also nurtures creativity, focus and confidence in one and two year olds.
Set up on a wipeable mat or in the high chair, use washable, non-toxic paints and pens, and keep sessions short. Taping paper down and offering one material at a time helps. An apron and a damp cloth on hand make clean-up quick after a busy toddler craft session.
Dab or finger painting is a great start — it's tactile, needs no skill and lets a one year old see cause and effect as marks appear. Chunky crayons on big paper and peeling and sticking large stickers are other easy first crafts for this age.
Choose non-toxic, washable, age-appropriate materials and supervise closely, since one and two year olds still mouth things. Avoid small parts, glitter and anything toxic, and pick chunky crayons and taste-safe dough. Keep scissors and small beads for older children.
