View full detailsLoose parts play means giving toddlers open-ended, movable pieces — large wooden rings, bowls, balls and blocks — to fill, tip, sort and stack however they like. For one and two year olds it's mostly about filling and emptying, which is exactly the schema toddlers love.
It builds fine-motor skills, early problem-solving and concentration as toddlers grasp, sort and combine pieces, with no single right way to play. Filling and tipping also teaches cause and effect and early maths ideas like more and less, all through hands-on exploration.
For one and two year olds, choose large, smooth, well-made pieces with no small parts or choking risk — chunky wooden rings, bowls, balls and coins sized for toddlers. Avoid tiny natural items at this age, and supervise closely since toddlers still mouth things.
Offer a small basket of large pieces plus a container to fill and tip, and let your toddler explore freely. Filling, dumping and posting are all valuable. Rotate the pieces to keep interest fresh, and keep the selection small so it doesn't overwhelm.
Only with large, safe pieces and close supervision. Choose loose parts too big to be a choking hazard, made from smooth, non-toxic materials, and stay nearby during play. Keep smaller loose parts for when your child has stopped mouthing, usually later in the toddler years.
